Happy Girl!

Mia has happy sessions and not so happy sessions as you have seen from the videos. Some exercises just make her mad! Today was a very happy session. Mia is always smiley for Claudia, Ramons, assistant, and now thinks Ramon is very funny-we think it's the accent :)

Today Mia got an extra hour of therapy today so the PT students from Aregentina could practice some exercises with her. I'll take it! She did really good even though she was tired. There is a good interview with Ramon and Oula on youtube -just search Ramon Cuevas. She just did it a few days ago for a school assignment. Off for another session :)

We had a really nice weekend. Spent Saturday with all of Ramon's clients at Rachels house- they have lived here off and on for the past year. Rachel has 5 children and her beautiful daughter Lily, sees Ramon. She made an amazing lunch buffet for all of us- best meal I've had in Chile so far. It was great to talk to the other moms and hear everyone's stories. We were discussing how crazy everyone thought we were for coming to Chile for therapy- until they see the results. Then all of a sudden we are not so crazy anymore. These are definitely a group of women that have would go to the ends of the earth to help their children and they are all an inspiration. Sunday another family from Canada - Daniele and her parents -invited us to hang out by the pool at the Marriott - was really nice out and had a fun afternoon. Mia had a great session this morning - almost no crying and even smiling and laughing at Ramon! Ramon has physical therapists from Argentina here to complete his Level I course so they were observing. He has treated some children from Argentina and they have seen the success so have come to get certified. The word is spreading all over the world! More videos on youtube...

Best Birthday Ever!

I can't imagine a better way to spend my birthday than in an amazing city with my favorite girl, new friends and an amazing physical therapist. Oula spilled the beans about my birthday and Ramon and Claudia ( Ramon's assistant and stepdaughter) got me a beautiful necklace that is a moon with a blue stone that is only found in Chile (thanks Oula:) ) I love it! Best souveneir and b-day present I could have gotten. After therapy we went out with Oula and her son and Danielle and her daughter. We had a great meal and girls night and it's great to be with people that can relate. Just got home at 9:30 so Mia is tired... will be going to another friends home tomorrow that actually lives her most of the time -all of Ramon's clients will be there -I'm sure there will be a lot to talk about :)

There is a beautiful park on the way to the Marriott (where Ramon's office is) with an amazing rose garden- we spend time there often. Jeff had taken sonme pictures of this really nice mall next to the Marriott which is where me and Mia go every day for dinner. They have a lot of stuff that we have - Taco Bell, McDonalds etc, but all are just a little different... they also eat a lot of ice cream- gelato- here. I haven't gotten into it. I'll get some pics of the other moms soon too...

Another great day of therapy. Mia progresses so quickly on some exercises it is amazing. She'll do 25 seconds the first time, 45 the next , then 80 the next. Ramon says she has a strong brain. I said "of course she takes after her mother." :) More videos on youtube...

Excelente!

Mia had a great session this morning- more videos on youtube.com - I will put them all under CME Mia to search for them. I brought her favorite ABC bear/dog whatever - a lot less crying :)
It's so cute cause when she is standing she starts looking around like she has a whole differnt point of view. She looks at Ramon a lot too- I think she's starting to like him :)

Mia had a real cryfest today. She did a couple of exercises that we had done last week with basically no response -and this week she responded to both of them. That means the brain is learning how to respond. It's neat to see that. Besides the two 45 minute sessions, she is happy as a clam. Babbling up a storm, laughing a lot, eating like a horse - I think she wants to move to Chile:) There are a lot of little blond Chilean babies around here- she'll fit right in. They have a lot of American TV shows w/ Spanish subtitles so we are watching a lot of Friends, 90210 (the old series) and HBO -I don't even have that at my own home! We miss Daddy but are enjoying lots of quality time together- and are excited for him to see progress when he comes back in 2 weeks...

Ramon was teaching Jeff some of the exercises when he was here- it's a lot harder than it looks. Ramon does it so effortlessly, but it can be pretty awkward when trying yourself. I will spend a lot of time practicing with him. The harder exercises will not be for the home program -thank God :) Ramon has over 700 exercises he has developed himself and he chooses which ones your child needs. He says he will not spend alot of time of head control with her because as your can see, when her trunk is straight, her head is usually straight- so that will come with the other exercises too. He says she has a lot of strength- she just doesn't know how to use it. She will gain that with repetition. It's not about "learning" the exercise, it's about repeating it so the brain will automatically repsond to it. When he does the first repetition she often responds slowly, then the second one, she responds in half the time. So you can just imagine as we keep repeating this how she will respond. Ramon says as humans we all have the innate ability to stand, walk, sit etc, but we have to figure out how to trigger the brain to perform those functions. I love his philosophy :) There is no "she can't do it" just "let's figure out how to make her do it." I'm going to put him in my luggage and take him home with me...

Princessa

This is a great one of her taking steps... the hand on the neck is not holding her up at all- it is just there for support... Love the way he calls her "Princessa" :)

Mia standing on Ramons legs -trunk completely unsupported- he is holding her thighs- each time she stood longer and longer. Yeah! This is huge for her as her trunk is her weakest spot.

Sorry this may be too long to watch here - some people are having trouble viewing...

Here is Mia crying her way through therapy (and burping). Ramon is sooooo good with her. When she is crying, she actually does a little better and is stronger -crying just because this is something different. She stops as soon as the exercise is over -big faker. She is standing so much holding all of her own weight and not collapsing right away like she usually does. Ramon says if he can get them in the standing position like this is a really good sign for the future... he also says he knows in the first 5 sessions if the therapt will help or not and he will tell people to go home if he does not think it will. We had our 5 th session today and Ramon is very happy with the way she is responding. The therapy is so exciting to watch- to finally see some progress. He does 3-4 repetitions of each exercise and you can see the improvement with each repetition. You can see he counts -often she won't respond until he counts to 30 the first time, then 20 the second time, etc. she improves so quickly. When she was standing, she was taking all of her owm weight, the strap is there for guidance- ho only expected 10 seconds the first time and this is what we got. It is so great to see her standing up straight. We are so proud of her for every single exercise...

First 2 sessions...

10:15 AM Edit This 4 Comments »

Mia had her first sessions of therapy yesterday. The first was just Ramon's evaluation of her. What an amazing man! We have never met anyone more passionate about their work than him. His energy is contagious. His is so positive about everything. He says he sees a lot of potential in Mia. He says we are just working with low tone - not a variety of other problems so it it not as complicated. Thank God that something with Mia is not complicated:) The first "real" session- she cried the whole time- and I mean CRIED. Tears, snot, screaming etc. Nothing was hurting her or too strenuous- she just did not want to do it. But she still responded to the excercises so we were excited. But this morning she did not cry once. In fact, she smiled most of the time. I am so glad I don't have to deal with 45 minutes of crying twice daily. She did really well. Some exercises she was slow to respond to, others the response came right away. It requires no cooperation from her- he is trying to illicit reflexes from her brain that will just happen with repetition. Some quicker than others. It is so exciting to watch. I can see why this is addicting. I will keep adding videos... off to another session.

We are getting used to the culture a little bit. Basically, NO ONE speaks any English or even attempts to, so we are definitely using out Spanish and will be learning a lot more. We found a very upscale mall with really good restaurants so we are much happier now. Ruby Tuesdays, TGI Fridays- but even there the food is different -not as good. We are on the South American weight loss plan :)Our friends Oula and Yussef arrived yesterday so we got to hang with them -they are staying diwn the hall from us. It's nice to have another English speaker. Out therapy will start tomorrow -9am and 3:30- we are so excited! Oula was telling us all about Ramon today and we can't wait to meet hime. Everyone says has a "gift from God." We'll post some pic's soon too.

We're Here!!!!

Ok - that was a long day of traveling... Mia did great, Jeff & I -not so great. We could not sleep on the flight, hard to get comfortable - so we were delirious by the time we arrived. Luckily, we got to our little B&B quickly and passed out. Now we are going to find a grocery store and get dinner. Erika is very nice - is going to show us where everything is -and another friend -Oula- from Canada arrives tomorrow with her son. The weather is nice, and so far the area we are in looks very nice -a lot of high rise condos, cute stores. We are just so glad the internet works ok! Will post again soon!

Off to Chile!!

Creepster Crawler

8:00 AM Edit This 1 Comment »

This contraption is to help Mia crawl. It supports her trunk (which is where she is weak) and allows her to move her arms and legs. She's also learning how to coordinate everything to actually go forward. Mia also got a new chair that she can sit in in restaurants so we don't have to hold her all the time. It is more supportive than a normal high chair and very portable. I think she likes it :)

Mia has Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy on Wednesdays. Occupational Therapy is not helping you decide what occupation you want to go into in the future :) Yes, that is what some people ask... it's fine motor skills - picking things up, playing, grabbing with both hands, etc., and we also work on strength. Here are a few pics...

By the way, I weighed Mia on out scale today and she was 22 lbs! She has been between 20-21 for the past 8 months or so, so it's nice to see she's finally gaining a little weight...

Mia has Physical therapy and Speech therapy today - she's doing really well with both. In Physical therapy we work on sitting, standing, and transitioning to different positions. Mia is a quick learner and is responding well to a new approach to PT with her therapist Tami. Tami is excellent with Mia and we are excited about the progress she has made. I will be posting some videos of PT as soon as I figure out how :) In Speech therapy we work on communication -Mia has to make choices between 2 objects by either sound or touching which one she wants - it's so cute. She chooses between bubbles or a ball, or this food or that food. Then we work on feeding. Mia loves to eat, but she is not that coordinated with her tongue so we have excercises and techniques we do to teach her to chew and move the food around better. She is obsessed with food and I can't wait until she can eat more solids. Right now she is just eating mashed up stuff and anything soft, yogurt, pudding, chunky baby food, etc. We are glad it's Friday so we can have three uninterrupted days with Miss Mia!

Therapy, Therapy, Therapy

As you know, Mia has every type of therapy possible - Physical, occupational, speech and play therapy... sounds fun huh? So basically 4-5 home visits a week... Although she is making some progress with this therapy, it is very SLOW progress. So we have decided to try a different type of therapy called CME (Cuevas Medek Exercise) that was invented by Ramon Cuevas. It is a special type of therapy that triggers areas in the brain to initiate reflexes required for mobility. Basically helps kids with movement disorders to walk. The catch is, the therapist lives in Chile. Yes, as in South America... Of course, the one type of therapy that may work for Mia has to be a 10 hour plane ride away. So, we are in the process of planning the trip now. We will go for the month of November. I will update this regularly with her progress until then, and then daily while we are in Chile. Yay!

Happy Girl...
